Resumen de Aproximación al sistema de metadatos en las Infraestructuras de Datos Espaciales

Se realizó una investigación sobre los metadatos en sentido general, detallando aquellos que se utilizan en la descripción de la información geográfica. Se presentaron los distintos tipos de metadatos, las funciones y las ventajas de usar estos esquemas en las infraestructuras de datos espaciales, así como la necesidad de contar con mecanismos bien articulados para establecer estos metadatos. Igualmente, fueron mencionados algunos de los estándares internacionales más usados para la creación de esquemas de metadatos para la información geográfica. Para ello el artículo se trazó como objetivo realizar una revisión conceptual del término, exponer las ventajas del uso de metadatos en dichas infraestructuras y presentar los estándares internacionales más utilizados para ello. Los materiales y métodos utilizados para la investigación fueron artículos científicos y literatura sobre el tema y entrevistas personales realizadas a ingenieros geomáticos, informáticos y especialistas en ciencias de la información. Como resultado se pudo evidenciar que la información geográfica y los metadatos usados para describirla son cada vez más necesarios, por lo cual, contar con mecanismos bien estructurados para ello, los cuales a su vez posibiliten la interoperatividad se hace tarea de primer orden. Por otra parte, se constató que la existencia de softwares para la creación de metadatos facilita una mayor acertividad en la asignación de los mismos. Si bien las ventajas de los metadatos son tangibles, aún queda mucho por hacer e investigar en esta materia.

An investigation was carried out on metadata in a general sense, detailing those that are used in the description of geographic information. The different types of metadata, the functions and advantages of using these schemas in spatial data infrastructures were presented, as well as the need for well-articulated mechanisms to establish this metadata. Likewise, some of the most widely used international standards for the creation of metadata schemes for geographic information were mentioned. For this the article was drawn as an objective to carry out a conceptual review of the term, to expose the advantages of using metadata in said infrastructures and present the most widely used international standards for this. The materials and methods used for the investigation 5 scientific articles, literature on the subject and personal interviews carried out with geomatic engineers, computer scientists and specialists in information sciences. As a result, it was possible to show that geographic information and the metadata used to describe it are increasingly necessary, therefore, having well-structured mechanisms for this, which in turn enable interoperability, becomes a task of the first order. On the other hand, it was found that the existence of softwares for the creation of metadata facilitates greater accuracy in their assignment. While the benefits of metadata are tangible, there is still much to do and research in this area.
