“¿Madre no está muy en sus cabales?”: Reescribiendo la madre castradora en la ficción audiovisual Bates Motel, la precuela contemporánea de Psicosis

    Introducción y objetivos. Se estudia la evolución del personaje de Norma Bates, la madre del asesino Norman en Psicosis, en diversas obras audiovisuales con el objetivo de observar los cambios en la descripción de la figura materna y su vinculación con la psicopatología y el posterior comportamiento criminal de Norman. Se pretende mostrar como su representación recoge las tendencias alrededor de la maternidad y la crianza de cada época. Metodología. Con el fin de contemplar la evolución del personaje de Norma en las obras derivadas de la novela Psycho (Bloch, 1959) se realizará un análisis textual de esta obra, de la película cinematográfica Psycho (Hitchcock, 1960), de las diversas secuelas cinematográficas y televisivas realizadas durante los años 80 y de la ficción seriada Bates Motel (A&E, 2013-2017). Resultados. En la novela y la primera película la figura de la madre se muestra de forma pasiva, sin voz propia, y se le atribuye en gran parte la culpa de la criminalidad de Norman. Las secuelas posteriores siguen esta estela. En cambio, en la precuela Bates Motel (A&E, 2013-2017) la madre es un personaje principal y la justificación de la conducta de Norman recae en un trauma infantil provocado por un padre violento. Discusión. La ficción televisiva Bates Motel reescribe el personaje de Norma modificando su rol como madre castradora. A la vez, también da un destino diferente al personaje de Marion Crane, la víctima de Norman en la novela y la película, por lo que la representación de las dos figuras femeninas secundarias en la historia original es más progresista e incorpora una relectura de la obra más afín con el contexto social actual, aunque sigue sin superar algunos estereotipos que recayeron en la mujer durante el postfeminismo.

    Introduction and objectives. The evolution of the character of Norma Bates, the mother of the murderer Norman in Psycho, is studied in various audiovisual works with the aim of observing the changes in the description of the maternal figure and its link with the son’s psychopathology and criminal behaviour. It is intended to show how the representation of her collects the trends around motherhood and upbringing of each era. Methodology. In order to contemplate the evolution of the maternal character in works derived from the novel Psycho (Bloch, 1959), a textual analysis of this work, of the film Psycho (Hitchcock, 1960), the subsequent film and television adaptations during the 80’s and the fiction series Bates Motel (A&E, 2013-2017). Results. In the first film, the mother figure is shown passively and is the one to blame for Norman's criminality. The sequels follow the same pattern. In contrast, in the prequel Bates Motel (A&E, 2013-2017) the mother is a protagonist and Norma’s upbringing alone is not to blame for Norman’s behavior. Discussion. This television series rewrites the character of Norma, modifying her role as a castrator mother. Likewise, the character of Marion Crane, who was the victim in the novel and the film, has in this series a different destiny, so the representation of the two secondary female figures in the original story is more progressive and incorporates a rereading of the work more akin to the current social context, although it doesn’t get over some postfeminist stereotypes.
