    Este artículo estudia el papel de las lenguas usadas en la Primera Vuelta al Mundo, expedición internacional que tenía tripulantes de una veintena de países, que hablaban lenguas distintas. La comunicación exigía lenguas vehiculares a bordo: el español y, en algunos casos, el latín y el sabir. Durante el recorrido, el portugués —con sus pídgines— y el malayo contribuyeron al comercio y las relaciones con los países visitados. El conocimiento de idiomas fue una clave de gran importancia para el éxito del viaje.

    This article studies the role of the languages used in the First Circumnavigation of the World, an international expedition that had crew members from twenty countries, who spoke different languages. Communication required vehicular languages on board: Spanish and, in some cases, Latin and Sabir. During the tour, Portuguese —with its pidgins— and Malay contributed to trade and relations with the countries visited. The knowledge of languages was a key of great importance for the success of the trip.
