    Il saggio copre un periodo che va dalla metà del Cinquecento alla fine del Seicento: dal viceregno siciliano di Juan de Vega alla morte di Giovanna Aragona Cortés, duchessa di Terranova e Monteleone, avvenuta a Madrid nel 1692. Entrambi gli eventi - l'inizio di un vicereame e la morte di un'erede di un vasto patrimonio che si estendeva tra la Sicilia, il regno di Napoli e il Messico sembravano a prima vista insignificanti. L'obiettivo del saggio è dimostrare la loro centralità, poiché le manovre politiche dei viceré che governarono la Sicilia tra la metà del Cinquecento e la fine del Seicento furono tra le cause del definitivo allontanamento dei principali lignaggi nella loro corsa ai vertici della Monarchia Spagnola.

    The essay encompasses a period that goes from the mid-sixteenth century to the end of the seventeenth century: from the Sicilian viceroyalty of Juan de Vega to the death of Giovanna Aragona Cortés, Duchess of Terranova and Monteleone, which took place in Madrid in 1692. Both events - the start of a viceroyalty and the disappearance of a heiress of a vast patrimony extended between Sicily, the kingdom of Naples and Mexico – seemed negligible at a first sight. Scope of the essay is to prove their centrality, as the political moves of the viceroys who ruled Sicily between the mid-sixteenth and late seventeenth centuries were among the causes of the definitive estrangement of the major lineages, in their race to the top of the Spanish monarchy.
