    El Programa Internacional de Geociencias (PICG) es una iniciativa conjunta de la UNESCO y de la Unión Internacional de Ciencias Geológicas y representa la única red mundial de cooperación internacional y multidisciplinar en Geociencias. El PICG constituye una plataforma internacional para que los científicos colaboren en proyectos encaminados a comprender la Tierra, sus recursos y el papel de la Geología en la sustentación de la sociedad. Los proyectos PICG han tejido una red mundial de infraestructuras y recursos humanos con gran nivel científico que permiten la transferencia de conoci- mientos y capacidades entre naciones y generaciones. El PICG se estructura en cinco temas: Cambio Global, Riesgos Geo- lógicos, Hidrogeología, Recursos terrestres y Control Geodinámico de la Tierra. El Consejo Científico del PICG vela por la calidad de los proyectos financiados. España participó en la gestación del PICG y fue uno de los países pioneros en constituir un Comité Nacional que a través de su intensa actividad durante 45 años ha contribuido eficazmente al avance de los objeti- vos de la UNESCO y a la implementación de proyectos. Esta implicación del Comité ha influido notablemente en el avance del conocimiento geocientífico en España y ha contribuido decisivamente a la internacionalización de la Geología española.

    The International Geoscience Programme (IGCP) is a joint initiative of UNESCO and the International Union of Geological Sciences and represents the unique worldwide network intertwining international and multidisciplinary coopera- tion in Geosciences. IGCP furnishes scientists with an international forum to cooperate in projects aiming to better unders- tand the Earth, its resources and the role the Geology plays in sustaining society. IGCP projects have tight-knitted a global network of research infrastructure and high-standard scientists allowing transfer of knowledge and capacities among nations and generations, IGCP projects deal with global issues within five main themes: Global Change, Geohazards, Hydrogeology, Earth Resources and Geodynamics. The IGCP International Scientific Board secures the quality of the supported projects.

    Spain participated at the beginning of the process and was one of the initial countries in having a National Committee, which through its rigorous and intensive activity during 45 years has significantly contributed to the advancement of the UNESCO’s objectives and to the project implementation. This Committee’s commitment with IGCP has played a remarkable part in the advancement of the geoscientific knowledge in Spain and has confidently catalysed the internationalization of the Spanish Geological literacy.
