    La historia del español en la R. P. C.es relativamente reciente y está marcada por un desarrollo irregular e inconsistente como consecuencia de los vaivenes sociopolíticos que experimentaron tanto España como el gigante asiático a lo largo del siglo XX. Su condición minoritaria, con todo, no ha privado sus perspectivas de progreso, mesuradas pero sostenidas, cobrando un significativo crecimiento desde el año 2000. En este artículo repasaremos los orígenes del español en la R. P. C.; sistematizaremos su evolución haciendo alusión a las diferentes etapas que ha experimentado en el tiempo; arrojaremos luz sobre las principales características de la licenciatura; abordaremos el rol que ocupa en otros niveles educativos; y, finalmente, recapitularemos algunas de las iniciativas vigentes más importantes destinadas a promover y difundir el español en el país.

    The history of Spanish in the People's Republic of China is relatively recent and is determined by an irregular and inconsistent development as a result of the socio-political ups and downs experienced by both Spain and the Asian giant throughout the 20th century. Its minority status, however, has not hindered its prospects for progress, which have been measured but sustained, with significant growth since the year 2000. In this article we will review the origins of Spanish in the P. R. C.; we will systematize its evolution, alluding to the different stages it has undergone over time; we will shed light on the main characteristics of the university degree; we will address the role it plays at other educational levels; and, finally, we will recapitulate some of the most important current initiatives aimed at promoting and disseminating Spanish language at the Red Dragon.
