• The world population is increasingly ageing as people are living longer, and this is concomitant to the persistent declines in the birth rate. In 2019, there were 703 million individuals aged 65 or more and this number is expected to double by 2050. The most recent projections about the population aged 80 or more are challenging, as they point to an exponential increase from 143 million in 2019 to 426 million people in 2050 (United Nations, 2019)
