    The Household PCS (PCS being a French nomenclature of socio-professional categories) enables the social position of a household to be analysed by the cross-referenced situation of the main adults in the household rather than on the basis of the profession of a single individual (reference person, dominant position, etc.). This new nomenclature reflects the multiplicity of resources (economic, educational, etc.) in the form of a hierarchical and modular grid, specifically distinguishing households according to social homogamy and mono- or bi-activity.

    Compared to approaches that categorise households on the basis of a single individual, it enables social phenomena to be described at household level and is accompanied by an explanatory gain in statistical models. It is made available in official statistics sources from 2022 onwards and is likely to be implemented retrospectively. After describing the Household PCS and its groups, the article illustrates its empirical contribution from three themes (place of residence and housing conditions, standard of living and wealth, educational trajectories of children). Finally, it presents the profound changes in family and professional categories that transformed the household structure between 1982 and 2019.

    La PCS Ménage permet d’analyser la position sociale d’un ménage en résumant la situation croisée des principaux adultes du ménage plutôt qu’à partir de la profession d’un seul individu (personne de référence, position dominante, etc.). Cette nouvelle nomenclature rend compte d’une multiplicité de ressources (économiques, scolaires, etc.) sous la forme d’une grille hiérarchisée et modulable, distinguant spécifiquement les ménages selon l’homogamie sociale et la mono- ou bi-activité. Par rapport aux approches qui catégorisent les ménages sur la base d’un seul individu, elle permet de décrire des phénomènes sociaux au niveau du ménage et s’accompagne d’un gain explicatif dans les modèles statistiques. Elle est mise à disposition dans les sources de la statistique publique à partir de 2022 et susceptible d’y être implémentée de façon rétrospective. Après avoir décrit la PCS Ménage et ses groupes, l’article illustre son apport empirique à partir de trois thématiques (lieu de résidence et conditions de logement, niveau de vie et de patrimoine, parcours scolaire des enfants). Il présente enfin les profondes évolutions familiales et professionnelles ayant transformé la structure des ménages entre 1982 et 2019.
