  Las capillas adquirieron gran importancia durante el Barroco, tanta que alcanzarona convertirse en verdaderas iglesias adosadas a otras. Muchas de las más relevantes seconstruyeron anejas a catedrales y parroquias mayores, pero asimismo a los templosconventuales, como bien ilustra el caso de los franciscanos, en sus distintas ramas. Las capillasen las iglesias de esta orden se justifican, por un lado, por la acogida que la misma otorgó alos laicos, que sobre todo a través de instituciones como las cofradías se hicieron presentescon magníficas capillas. De otro lado, hay que tener en cuenta la propia espiritualidad y lasdevociones de la orden, que de un modo muy particular se manifestaron en la Pasión de Cristoy en el culto a la Virgen, como la Inmaculada Concepción. La antigua iglesia de franciscanosobservantes de Priego de Córdoba proporciona un magnífico ejemplo de ese valor de lascapillas, de su vinculación a las cofradías y de su dedicación a los misterios de la Pasión, altiempo que la Inmaculada preside el templo desde el camarín del retablo mayor.

  Chapels acquired great importance during the Baroque period, so great that theyreached the point of becoming actual churches attached to others. Many of the most relevantones were built as annexes to cathedrals and parish churches, but likewise to convent churches,well illustrated by the case of the Franciscans, in their different branches. The chapels in thechurches of this order are justified, on the one hand, by the acceptance that this order gaveto lay persons, who above all through institutions such as confraternities, gave themselves apresence with magnificent chapels, On the other hand, we must take into account the spiritualityitself and devotions of the order, which in a very particular way displayed themselves in thePassion of Christ and the cult of the Virgin, such as the Immaculate Conception. The oldchurch of the Observant Franciscans of Priego de Córdoba provides a magnificent exampleof that value of the chapels and of their link to the confraternities and their dedication to themysteries of the passion, while Mary the the Immaculate presides over the church from thealcove in the main altarpiece.
