El siglo XIX fue un periodo de profundos cambios en las Provincias Vascas. Un periodo convulso en el que se transformaron las instituciones, la sociedad y la economía. El proceso de abolición foral (1876) provocó cicatrices bélicas, crisis ecológica y sobresaltos socio-económicos. Todo esto ha dejado sus marcas en el territorio y su lectura arqueológica es fundamental para comprender el “Sattelzeit” vasco, es decir, analizar la “mutación” sufrida en las Provincias Vascas durante el siglo XIX que desembocó en el mundo contemporáneo y su reflejo en el paisaje y sus consecuencias.Para ello estamos analizando el municipio gipuzkoarra de Leintz-Gatzaga, limítrofe con el Territorio Histórico de Araba y cabecera del río Deba. En él encontramos diferentes características que son de interés para el estudio de este periodo, como ser paso estratégico entre Araba y Gipuzkoa, o tener una importante producción de sal mediante evaporación forzada. Con todo esto pretendemos demostrar cómo estas circunstancias ayudaron a generar unas condiciones particulares que influyeron en el paisaje del lugar durante el Antiguo Régimen y que la abolición foral y la creación del estado-nación español transformaron de forma traumática. En particular el trabajo que aquí se presenta se enfoca en profundizar los cambios determinados en el paisaje desde la Guerra de Convención (1793-1795) hasta la creación del Servicio Forestal de la Diputación de Gipuzkoa (1905), institución surgida con el fin de modernizar y ordenar la gestión forestal.

The XIX century was a period of dramatic changes in the Basque Provinces. It was a tumultuous period of renovations in institutions, society and the economy. The abolition process left war scars, ecological crisis and socio-economic changes. This period also left its archaeological remains in the landscape and we can read them in order to understand the Basque “Sattelzeit”: the mutation suffered in the Basque Provinces during the XIX century and ending in the final construction of the contemporary world. We start by analyzing Leintz-Gatzaga, a town of Gipuzkoa, bordering with the Province of Araba and located in the Deba valley. Here we find different features of interest to study along this period. For example how to find a strategic route between Araba and Gipuzkoa, or how to have a relevant salt production by forced evaporation. Taking thi into account, we can demonstrate how these circumstances helped to generate the special conditions that have affected the scenery of the area during the Ancien Régime and that the regional abolition and the creation of the Spanish nation-state changed traumatically within this period of history. Particularly the work we are doing here is to focus and to go in depth to discover the changes that determined the scenery between the time period of The War of the Convention (1793-1795) and the creation of the Forest Service of the Gipuzkoa Council (1905), an institution created in order to modernise and organise the Forest management.
