Resumen
Debido a la gran aceptación que alcanzaron los textos biográficos durante el siglo XVIII, como parte del auge que experimentaron los géneros históricos en general, se llegaron incluso a narrar biografías de entes inmateriales o simbólicos y así, Daniel Defoe publicó en 1726 The Political History of the Devil, que también muestra otra tendencia del momento, el gusto por los temas ocultos. El texto expresa la ideología del autor, que creía en la existencia del demonio, sin embargo, lo que a la postre le interesa es denunciar las supersticiones populares alrededor de esta figura y que se le culpe de los errores cometidos por los humanos. Por último, es especialmente reseñable el interés de sus contemporáneos en la obra; un interés que se ha extendido hasta nuestros días / Given the great recognition achieved by biographical texts during the eighteenth century, as part of the boom experienced by historical genres in general, biographies of immaterial and symbolical entities were even available. Following this trend Daniel Defoe published The Political History of the Devil in 1726, which is also the reflection of another tendency of the time, the attraction of the occult. The text exhibits the author’s ideology, since he believed in the existence of the devil; however, Defoe was actually interested in denouncing popular superstitions and the fact that human beings tend to blame the devil for their own errors.
