A floristic analysis was carried out in the Supramediterranean pastures of the El PaularValley (Sierra de Guadarrama, Central Iberian System). The systematic investigation of a 1.9 harevealed a contingent of 275 angiosperm taxa, members of 47 families and 176 genera. This figurerepresents more than 20% of the total flora of the valley. The analysis of the taxonomic, biotypic, andchorologic spectrums reveals a high richness of taxa, families, and genera. In addition, the presence ofspecies which are rare in the local and/or provincial areas gives these communities special singularity. The presence of a significant Eurosiberian component and the dominance of the hemicryptophyticbiotype indicate the structural affinity of these pastures with the northernmost pastures of the IberianPeninsula. This resemblance is remarkable because these pastures are located in the Mediterraneanregion, where pastures of this type are scarce and highly dependent on the availability of water.Maintaining traditional use of these pastures has allowed these communities to survive to the presentday, and planning for continued traditional use will be important for their future survival.
