Resumen de Entre mito y realidad histórica: La institucionalización de la iglesia en la hispania visigoda

Tradicionalmente, se ha considerado la Península Ibérica como una región mediterránea muy tempranamente y completamente cristianizada: la Iglesia presentándose a sí misma como dada por Dios, como un fenómeno sin historia con toda apariencia de naturalidad. Esta visión, sin embargo, es asombrosa, ya que los testimonios escritos que nos han llegado revelan otra realidad: los enormes esfuerzos que fueron necesarios para darle a la Iglesia la forma con la que estamos familiarizados. Concentrándonos en cinco ámbitos –la formación de las jerarquías clericales y de los correspondientes edificios como elementos del mundo eclesiástico, la imposición de un nuevo orden territorial y de gobierno, y el patrimonio de las iglesias– nos gustaría demonstrar la evolución de la Iglesia como institución y organización a partir de una larga serie de actos legislativos: con ello, llegó a ser el resultado de un proceso de anclaje en las estructuras sociales y mentales de la colectividad.

The Iberian Peninsula has traditionally been considered a Mediterranean region that was early on fully Christianized: The perception of a Church that presented itself as God-given, as an ahistorical phenomenon bearing the semblance of naturalism. Yet this traditional perspective is still puzzling, for written records passed down to us do point towards another reality: the incredible efforts needed to create the Church in the form familiar to us. We are focusing five research fields in this paper –the formation of the clerical hierarchies and of the respective buildings as elements of the ecclesiastical world, the imposition of a new territorial order and way to govern and the Churches’ patrimony– to demonstrate that the Spanish church emerged as an institution and social organization from a succession of willful acts resulting in a process of entrenchment in the social and mental structures of the collectives.
