Resumen de Cortés en la conciencia mexicana del siglo XXI: o de la necesidad de asumir nuestra historia

La figura de Cortés ha sido tratada de distintas formas en la historiografía de México desde el siglo XVI. Se ha interpretado al conquistador desde distintas perspectivas, de acuerdo a la ideología imperante, de acuerdo también a las circunstancias nacionales o a movimientos intelectuales tendientes a rebajar o a destacar los elementos de hispanidad que constituyen al ser mexicano. La llamada Leyenda Negra antihispánica, proclive a desacreditar la labor colonizadora y evangelizadora de España en América, y, sobre todo, a interpretar la conquista de México como un evento cruel y genocida, alternó con una Leyenda Dorada pro cortesiana que trató de rescatar el valor del extremeño y su gran influencia en la creación de México como nación. En pleno siglo XXI, hay varias corrientes de interpretación de Cortés y de la gesta que llevó a cabo, mas, de cara a la conmemoración de su hazaña, aún hay sectores de la población mexicana que no saben cómo explicar las paradojas del personaje, cómo entender la Conquista, sobre todo en la relación actual con los pueblos originarios, y como, en suma, asumir la historia que nos conforma

The figure of Cortes has been treated in different ways in the historiography of Mexico since the 16th century. The conqueror has been interpreted from different perspectives, according to the prevailing ideology, also according to national circumstances or intellectual movements tending to reduce or highlight the elements of Hispanicism that constitute the Mexican being. The so-called an- ti-Hispanic Black Legend, prone to discredit the colonizing and evangelizing work of Spain in America, and, above all, to interpret the conquest of Mexico as a cruel and genocidal event, alternated with a pro-courteous Golden Legend that tried to rescue the value from Extremadura and its great influence on the creation of Mexico as a nation. In the 21st century, there are several currents of interpretation of Cortés and the deed that he carried out, more, in the face of the commemoration of his feat, there are still sectors of the Mexican population that do not know how to explain the character’s paradoxes, how understand the Conquest, especially in the current relationship with the original peoples, and how, in short, assume the history that makes us up
