Resumen de Escala del Atlántico: una aproximación a la relación puerto-ciudad en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

La Islas Canarias se insertaron en las diferentes oleadas de mundialización y globalización a través de sus conexiones marítimas. Desde la primera expansión ultramarina europea, las islas se posicionaron como enclaves esenciales de escala y también como plataforma logística para la navegación internacional en África noroccidental. En consecuencia, los entornos urbanos litorales se configuraron en estrecha relación con los flujos marítimos. En este artículo, se realiza una aproximación a la evolución de la relación puerto-ciudad en Las Palmas de gran Canaria en el largo plazo. Se atenderá, por una parte, a la configuración morfológica de la ciudad. Por otra, a la vinculación patrimonial, tanto material como inmaterial que el puerto y las actividades marítimas han generado en la ciudad isleña.

The Canary Islands were introduced into the several waves of globalization through its maritime connections. The Islands have been an essential location for the international shipping from the early European overseas expansion onwards. Thus, the urban environments located on the proximity of the changing waterfront have evolved in a related way how seaborne interactions did. This article deals with a long-term approach on the port-city relationship in Las Palmas de gran Canaria. It focuses on the morphological evolution of the city in historical perspective. On the other hand, this article explores the linkages between the port and maritime activities and the current cultural heritage, both material and intangible.
