    La llegada en 1788 al Real Gabinete de Historia Natural de Madrid del esqueleto desmontado de un gran animal descubierto en Luján (actual Argentina) fue un acontecimiento de gran relevancia. Llegó acompañado de cuatro láminas descriptivas y de un dibujo interpretativo del esqueleto montado, todos hechos en América. Para reconstruirlo se responsabilizó a Juan Bautista Bru, primer disecador y pintor del Real Gabinete. Durante cinco años Bru trabajó en ello, llevando a cabo una tarea sin precedentes pues pronto se dio cuenta de que se trataba de un animal desconocido en aquel momento, del que no había pautas de montaje. Observó sus relativas afinidades con los cuadrúpedos y, por ello, le montó en esa configuración. Al no ser experto en Anatomía, Bru colocó algunos huesos defectuosamente. Cuvier tuvo conocimiento de los huesos sueltos y su reconstrucción y lo publicitó dándoles a conocer en el mundo científico y definiendo el nuevo género Megatherium. El descubrimiento del nuevo animal fósil tuvo grandes repercusiones en la discusión que estaba teniendo lugar sobre el origen y evolución de la fauna mundial a lo largo de la historia de la Tierra. En este artículo, la segunda parte de un trabajo sobre el megaterio, se relata cómo montado el esqueleto en Madrid y las repercusiones que ello conllevó para las ideas científicas del momento. Se ha hecho énfasis en los logros del grupo de españoles que supo hacer frente al reto que suponía realizar dicha tarea novedosa, nunca hecha previamente por nadie, y que no ha recibido el reconocimiento que en justicia le corresponde por tan importante e innovadora labor. En un primer artículo se relata cómo fue descubierto, excavado y enviado a España el esqueleto desmontado de un animal enorme y sorprendente por su originalidad estructural, que no se parecía a ningún otro vivo.

    When the dismantled skeleton of a big animal which was discovered in Lujan (now in Argentina) arrived in 1788 to Real Gabinete de Historia Natural in Madrid, it was a great event. The bones were accompanied by four descriptive sheets with separate bones and by a interpretative design of the whole skeleton assembled. Juan Bautista Bru was put in charge to reconstruct it as main painter and dissecter of Real Gabinete. Bru worked for five years carrying out a task without precedent as soon deduced that the bones belonged to an unknown animal and that he had not a model for assembly them. He noted that bone had a weak affinity with quadruped ones and so he arranged the skeleton in this way. Bru was not expert in Anatomy and put some bones faultily. Cuvier knew the drawings of the bones and the skeleton nade by Bru after assemble them, gave publicity to them to inform to scientific world and defined a new fossil genera named Megatherium. The discovery of these remains had great importance in the discussion about the origin and evolution of world fauna throughout the history of the Earth. In this article, second part of a more extensive work about Lujan Megathere, the bones assembly and identification process in Madrid are related with special reference to Georges Cuvier’s participation. Also the repercussion that they had for the scientific ideas of the epoch are explained. An emphasis on success of Spanish group of people work have been done. They faced the challenge to make some tasks never done by nobody before, and have not received the gratitude which correspond to them for such important and innovative work. A precedent article reports how such big and amazing dismantled skeleton was discovered, excavated and sent to Spain.
