In the Madrid Regional Autonomy, the safeguarding, management and dynamisation of peri-urban agricultural spaces are faced with a daunting challenge, both due to a lack of a metropolitan territorial strategy and of a framework of specific regulations for protecting these areas, and to the absence of support from the institutions and of specific aid aimed at preventing the disappearance of the agricultural sector in such fragile spaces, which are subjected to great pressure. In turn, the traditional links between the city and the periurban spaces, haven been weakened to the point that their economic, cultural and landscape functions are being greatly affected. However, some initiatives are taking place at a local scale, such as the case of la Agricultural Park of Fuenlabrada, which are reversing this trend on the basis of knowledge and participation.
