  Pese al escaso interés que han despertado entre los etnólogos y etnohistoriadores, los testamentos se revelan como una valiosa fuente para aproximarse no sólo a las actitudes ante la muerte o las costumbres funerarias, sino incluso a temas desde siempre vinculados a la antropología como es por ejemplo el del parentesco, entendido en su acepción más amplia. Utilizando materiales en su mayoría inéditos procedentes de los dos primeros siglos de la Guatemala colonial, se pretende en este ensayo aproximarse a rubros tales como la filiación, las leyes de herencia (tanto individual como colectiva), las desiguales actitudes ante he-rederos de diverso sexo, los litigios registrados entre parientes consanguíneos o entre éstos y los afines, e lvínculo entre la herencia y las tradiciones religiosas fa-miliares, y varios otros temas, que remiten una y otra vez a la íntima relación que aún hoy es posible observar entre los muertos y los vivos en el mundo maya

  Despite a lack of interest among ethnologists and ethnohistorians, the Mayan testaments are a valuable source of information in order to approach not only their attitudes towards death or their funerary traditions but also topics that have always been linked to anthropology such as kinship, understood in its wider meaning. Using mostly unreleased material from the first two centuries of the Guatemalan colony, the purpose of this essay is to approach issues such as filiation, inheritance laws(individual as well as collective), dissimilar attitudes towards heirs of different gender, the registered lawsuits among either consanguineous relatives or among them and their relatives, the link between inheritance and family religious traditions as well as other topics that relate to the intimate relation between life and death within the Mayan world observed even in our times
