    A través de los rasgos estructurales de las rocas se puede deducir la evolución de las mismas en la superficie de la tierra. Estos rasgos de valor científico, didáctico, histórico o turístico, se incluyen dentro del patrimonio natural con interés también cultural. El Fraile de Beas de Granada se muestra como una figura rocosa considerada como el símbolo de esta localidad granadina. Esta figura está cincelada por la erosión del agua y el viento, que ha modelado la roca en forma de busto con un faldón parecido a un fraile. Desde el punto de vista histórico y turístico la estructura resultante la asocian con el mito, que un árabe construyó el Fraile para esconder en su interior un tesoro de gran valor. Sin embargo, la historia geológica demuestra que este rasgo geomorfológico ha sido consecuencia del modelado de unos estratos formados por una discordancia progresiva, asociada con el levantamiento de Sierra Nevada desde hace 8,3 Ma. La forma singular que muestra esta roca, la importancia paleogeográfica de este enclave, la localización dentro del Parque Natural Sierra de Huétor y la situación dentro de itinerarios geoturísticos, es motivo para que sea un sitio de interés geológico y cultural.

    Through the structural features of the rocks can be deduced the evolution of the rocks on the surface of the earth. These traits of scientific, didactic, historical or tourist value are included within the natural heritage with cultural interest. The so-called “Fraile de Beas” is a rock considered as the symbol of this small location included in Granada province. This figure is chiselled by the erosion of water and wind, which has shaped the rock resembling a standing monk with a monk-like skirt. From the historical and tourist point of view the resulting structure has been associated with the myth that the Fraile was built by an Arab to hide inside it a treasure of great value. However, the geological history demonstrates that this geomorphological feature has been the result of the modeling of a stratum formed by a progressive discordance, associated with the Sierra Nevada rising from 8.3 million years ago. The singular shape of this rock, the paleogeographic importance of this enclave, the location within the Natural Park of the Sierra de Huétor and the location within geotouristic itineraries, justify its inclusion as a site of geological and cultural interest.
