Resumen de Deseos rotos en el Pacífico. Mar y estrategia. Mega portacontenedores e índices

José-Esteban Pérez García

  • World maritime strategies in the Indo-Pacific area have gained importance due to the sudden change in the Australian naval policy, including the termination of a contract with the French Naval Group for the construction of 12 large last-generation non-nuclear submarines. These will be replaced now with nuclear-powered submarines of US origin. This article offers some reflections on the new scenario appearing in the South China Sea, as well as on the effect on the French naval shipbuilding industry which also becomes an uncomfortable scenario for the European Union.

In its second part, the article also deals with the advantages or disadvantages of the current trend towards mega-containerships, considering both sailing and port costs, as well as collateral and indirect impacts.

Finally, as an annex, the reader can find a description of the most relevant indexes used in shipping analyses.
