Resumen de Miriam Schapiro: del hard-edge al ornamento

La presente comunicación se propone visibilizar cómo la transición que se produce en la obra de Miriam Schapiro -del hard-edge al ornamento- subvierte las jerarquías de conceptos opuestos como son: superficial sobre profundo, normas sobre emoción, intelectual sobre sentimental, “arte realizado por un hombre sobre arte realizado por una mujer” (Jaudon y Kozloff, 2018, p.46) entre otras. Jerarquías que emplazan a lo ornamental en un rango inferior al considerarlo despectivamente femenino, superficial y carente de contenido (Greenberg, 2018).
Para ello, conoceremos los inicios de su pintura, en la línea de la abstracción geométrica y el hard-edge y aplicando las teorías entorno al ornamento del comisario Markus Brüderlin y la crítica Amy Goldin, analizaremos algunas de sus obras. Veremos cómo a partir de los años 70, la artista aúna arte, condición política y vida para reforzar su pintura en un giro radical hacia lo ornamental y decorativo.

The following communication proposes to make visible how the change of direction in the artwork of Miriam Schapiro -from hard-edge to ornaments- subverts the hierarchies of opposing concepts such as superficial over profound, norms on emotion, intellectual over sentimental, “art made by a man over art made by a woman” (Jaudon and Kozloff, 2018, p.46), among others. Hierarchies that places the ornamental in a Lowe status by considering it pejoratively feminine, superficial and laking in content (Greenberg, 2018).
With this aim, we well get to know the origins of her painting, in the line of geometric abstraction and hardedge style, and applying the theories on ornamentation of the curator Markus Brüderlin and the critic Amy Goldin, we will analyze some of her works. We will see how since the 70s the artists, committed to the feminist movement, combines art, political condition and life to reinforce her painting in a radical turn towards the ornamental and decorative.
