El Ministerio de Defensa, para cumplir con la Ley 16/1985 de Patrimonio Histórico Español, crea la Subdirección General de Publicaciones y Patrimonio Cultural, y en el ámbito del Ejército de Tierra, es el Instituto de Historia y Cultura Militar, que se estructura en una Subdirección de Patrimonio, otra de Estudios Históricos y ocho Centros de Historia y Cultura Militar que abarcan todo el territorio nacional. Los Centros tienen la misma estructura, Dirección, Museo, Archivo y Biblioteca, entre ellos se encuentra el Sur, que con sede en Sevilla, y con otro museo en Cartagena, es el órgano responsable, en su Área de Responsabilidad, extendida a las comunidades de Andalucía y Murcia, de la protección, conservación, investigación y difusión del patrimonio histórico, cultural, documental y bibliográfico del Ejército de Tierra. El Museo Militar de Sevilla expone casi 4.000 fondos, el de Cartagena, más de 3.000, la Biblioteca posee más de 43.000 volúmenes y el Archivo custodia sobre 30.000 unidades de instalación que corresponden a 5.210 metros lineales.

The Ministry of Defense, in compliance with Law 16/1985 regarding Spanish Historical Patrimony, created the General Sub-direction of Cultural Publications and Patrimony, which for the Army is the Institute of Military History and Culture that is organized into one Patrimony Sub-direction, another of Historical Studies, and eight Centers of Military History and Culture that cover all the nation.
The Centers all have the same four-part structure of Direction, Museum, Archive and Library, and the Southern Center with central offices in Seville and an additional museum in Cartagena covers Andalusia and Murcia, and is responsible for the protection, conservation, research and dissemination of the historical patrimony and culture, documentation and bibliography of the Army. The Military Museum of Seville displays nearly 4,000 items that of Cartagena more than 3,000, while the library possess more than 43,000 volumes, and the archive holds over 30,000 documents of 5,210 lineal metros.
