This paper studies the construction pensar de + infinitive in Old Catalan, an ephemeral structure documented in historiographic works that acquired periphrastic values linked to narration and which, moreover, has scarcely been researched in the Romance languages. The objectives that we intend to address in this study are, firstly, to explain the process of this construction formation according to the postulates of Goldberg's Cognitive Construction Grammar (CCG) (1995; 2006). Secondly, to describe the process of grammaticalization that it experienced until it became a narrative-aspectual periphrasis, through the methodology based on linguistic corpora -Corpus Textual Informatitzat del Català Antic (CICA) and the Corpus Informatizat de la Gramàtica del Català Antic (CIGCA)- and the role played by the pragmatic context and the invited inferences in the semantic change (Traugott/Dasher 2002). Thirdly, to detail the characteristics of this periphrasis in Catalan and to document it in Spanish, French, Galician, and Occitan. Finally, to clarify the reasons why the construction began a process of grammatical obsolescence (Rudnicka 2008) since the 14th century onwards, which led this periphrasis to the extinction.
