This paper presents a contrastive study that explores the distribution of infinitive and completive constructions of proponer vs. proposer using a corpus of examples taken from Spanish and French ADESSE, CREA and FRANTEXT databases. It addresses the following issues: (i) the identification of the subject referent of the governed verb (S2)– a crucial issue when the subject of the infinitive construction is not implied or is unspoken–; (ii) the distribution of the infinitive and completive in both languages; (iii) modal alternation in completive constructions; and (iv) the relevance of both contextual and situational factors in identifying the referent of the governed verb (S2).
