  • Resumen
    • Equestrian tourism has been developed with success in many European countries; but it has received not much attention in Spain until recently. Spanish rural areas present enough strength to become an equestrian top destination. Firstly, it must be mentioned the large and old tradition on horses manifested in the Purebred Spanish Horse reputation and in the high profile of the international equestrian events. On the other hand, important natural and cultural attractions and scenic landscapes exist in rural areas. Additionally, it must be highlighted the Mediterranean climate as a key resource. There is also a private stakeholder and local authority’s willingness and interest in Equestrian Tourism, framed in the perspective of the local development. Marketing issues have been also studied. In this context, the Royal Spanish Equestrian Federation (RFHE), in 2011 promoted the implementation of an Equestrian Trail Program that includes design considerations looking for the quality of outdoor experience. The current research is based on the expertise of the authors in the enhancement of territorial resources for tourism purposes, and in the design and implementation of several equestrian trails following international standards and the criteria submitted by RFHE. Results point out the opportunities to improve and expand Equestrian Tourism in Spain.
