  Algunas de las tecnologías educativas nacieron inicialmente con un fin diferente al formativo. Un ejemplo es el PDF-3D que, a pesar de tener un gran potencial en el sector de la formación, es aún poco conocido en el mundo educativo. El PDF-3D es una tecnología educativa fácil de crear o diseñar y es especialmente útil para asignaturas relacionadas con la visión espacial, ya que esta herramienta ofrece diferentes aplicaciones útiles en ese ámbito: hacer partes transparentes, hacer cortes, girar piezas, rotar piezas, etc. Además, su gran ventaja es la de poderse abrir con Acrobat Reader®, es decir, que no se necesita tener instalado en el ordenador ningún programa especial para trabajar con un PDF-3D
