Resumen de Radio Broadcasts as Resources‐‐(A) Using Programmed Adjuncts

• An experiment was conducted using a BBC radio series in “O‐Grade Modern Studies” broadcast in Scotland. There was one main hypothesis for testing: that pupils receiving structured (programmed) workbooks as a preparation for radio broadcasts would be equal or superior in their understanding and retention of the concepts communicated by the broadcast when compared with pupils who received preparation by the teacher and based upon the conventional “Teachers’ Notes.” Analysis of the results showed that the booklets improved the pupils’ comprehension and that there was an interaction between the mode of preparation and the use of short check‐tests after broadcasts. The findings are discussed in the light of the type of preparation used for broadcasts and the materials supplied to teachers on which to base their preparation and followup.
