  • Resumen
    • When the world offers us such rich sound responses and when we are constantly surrounded by informative sounds, it is surprising how we keep limiting ourselves to traditional interfaces where information is visually displayed. When we think of cinema and its soundtrack, we tend to assume that it cannot survive independently from the film as a complex endowed with internal unity. In fact, Michel Chion (1994) states that a movie with no sound remains a movie, where a movie without image does not. This project draws on these two statements and explores sonification in the cinematographic medium as an artistic tool capable of transcending the sound of cinema and fostering its prominence in this medium as a fundamental element in the audio-visual experience that constitutes cinema. Although being inserted in the sonification area and being close to automatic generation of soundtrack, this project does not classify as neither. Taking advantage of the characteristics and tools of both, this project tries to establish itself as a manifesto to the power of sound and the versatility of data sonification. Through the development of a system which is able to turn film into sound by analysing and collecting visual data from a video, this project proposes to present an audiovisual composition whose sound was automatically generated by the system. Although the final product of this project is presented in the form of only one video —"Shapes"— the system was developed and tested on a set of 9 different videos.
