  Este artículo examina peticiones elaboradas al largo del siglo XVIII por afrodescendientes libres de diversas capitanías de la América portuguesa. El objetivo de este análisis es identificar las formas en que estos individuos outsiders, entonces marginados en consecuencia de sus vínculos ancestrales con la esclavitud, procuraban confrontar los estigmas, sintetizados en la noción de “defecto”, que les eran imputados por individuos y grupos sociales establecidos. El problema central de este análisis se refiere a los cambios en el contenido de dichas peticiones. Sugerimos que hasta la década de 1760, es decir, hasta las llamadas “reformas pombalinas”, el concepto de “accidente” se constituyó en el principal medio de los afrodescendientes combatieren las pretericiones e impedimentos perpetrados contra ellos. Tras el adviento de las leyes producidas por las “reformas”, tendió a prevalecer una nueva configuración de este campo de tensiones, puesto que el argumento de los afrodescendientes libres pasó a concentrarse en la defensa de sus “elevación” y “equiparación” con los individuos y grupos sociales establecidos, así como en la defensa de su “habilitación” para la ocupación de los rangos, oficios y funciones sociales de prestigio que hasta entonces les habían sido obstados.

  This article examines petitions elaborated throughout the 18th century by free Afro-descendants of variouscaptaincies of Portuguese America. The purpose of this analysis is to identify the ways in which these outsiders, then marginalized as a result of their ancestral ties to slavery, attempted to confront the stigmas, synthesized in the notion of “defect”, which were imputed to them by individuals and social groups established. The central problem of this analysis concerns changes in the content of such requests. We suggest that until the 1760s, that is, until the so-called “Pombaline reforms”, the concept of “accident” became the main means for Afro-descendants to combat the deprivation and impediments perpetrated against them. After the advent of the laws produced by the “reforms”, a new configuration of this field of tensions prevailed, since the argument of free Afro-descendants began to focus on defending their “elevation” and “equalization” with the individuals and social groups established, as well as in the defense of their “habilitation” for the occupation of the ranks, offices and social functions of prestige that until then had been obstructed to them.
