Resumen de Valeurs de contemporanéité: Pour une rénovation de la théorie des monuments d'Aloïs Riegl

Gabi Dolff-Bonekämper

  • In his article "Der moderne Denkmalkultus, Sein Wesen und seine Entstehung" (The Modern Cult of Monuments, its Nature and its Origins) published in 1903, Alois Riegl developed his finely dialectic concept of the values that can be attributed toa monument, erected as such or having become such over time. In this article, accent is given to the continuous presentification of values in all judgment, tied to a constantly advancing present. Any present, marked by its own antagonisms, will see disagreements around the possible values attributable to a monument. Thus is introduced here the notion of an adversarial value or of confrontation: the disagreement over the monument articulates a contemporary disagrement that becomes negotiable in the context of a heritage debate
