O presente trabalho pretende fazer uma análise do período inicial da República Velha salientando seus pontos de rupturas e permanências em relação ao período imperial, em especial nas esferas social e política. Para tal, a principal referência teórica a ser explorada é o conceito de patrimonialismo, presente na obra de Raymundo Faoro e outros autores, que constitui uma estrutura condicionante das ações dos atores sociais e políticos, bem como do arranjo institucional do Estado, mesmo diante de rupturas formais. This paper aims to analyze the initial period of the Old Republic, stressing their points of ruptures and continuities in relation to the imperial period, especially in social and political spheres. To this end, the main theoretical framework to be explored is the concept of patrimonialism, present in the work of Raymundo Faoro and other authors, which is a constraint structure of the actions of social and political actors as well as the institutional arrangement of the state, even before formal breaks. At the same time, consider how the Republicans sought to legitimize and justify the new regime, still unstable, through a certain view of the previous regime and a projection of the Republic, which represent modernity, could be.
