Resumen de Justicias de proximidad y administración del orden rural en Cuba y Río de la Plata (1759-1808)

  Este trabajo examina el problema del gobierno del campo en dos regiones bien distantes de la monarquía hispánica: Cuba y el Río de la Plata. El abordaje conjunto se basa en la implementación para ambos territorios, a fines del siglo xvIII, de oficiales «pedáneos», denominados capitanes y jueces, respectivamente, en el espacio cubano y rioplatense. Los autores sostienen que estas bajas justicias fueron claves en el gobierno de las poblaciones rurales, dando cuerpo a los intentos reformistas de controlar la circulación de hombres y cosas en territorios que estaban experimentando un acelerado cambio en su composición social, contribuyendo así a hacer visibles novedosos y activos sectores intermedios.

  This paper examines the problem of how the Spanish Monarchy governed the countryside in two areas far removed from the centre: Cuba and the Río de la Plata. The analysis focuses on the so-called pedaneos, who served as both captains and judges. Created at the end of the 18th century, these officers delivered a form of «rough justice» and played a key role in governing rural populations. They embodied the reformist project of regulating the circulation of people and things within territories experiencing incremental change in their social structure. In this way, they contributed to making new, middling social actors increasingly visible.
