Resumen de ¿Qué hacemos las enfermeras?: Profesionalización, autonomía y asociatividad de la enfermería chilena, 1940-1960

La enfermería chilena experimentó importantes procesos de autonomía profesional y de construcción de una voz pública entre 1940 y 1960, apoyados por una serie de reuniones científicas y gremiales, tanto nacionales como internacionales patrocinadas por la Fundación Rockefeller y la Oficina Panamericana de la Salud, entre otros organismos internacionales. Asimismo, el Servicio Nacional de Salud, fundado en 1952, potenció la definición de funciones y el liderazgo de estas profesionales desde sus primeros años, en virtud de la importancia de las prestaciones que ellas cumplían. Privilegiando el análisis de fuentes primarias producidas por las propias enfermeras, y sus reflexiones sobre su quehacer, este artículo describe algunos de esos procesos, dando luces sobre la historia de este oficio, y su decisiva contribución a la implementación de políticas sanitarias en el Chile de mediados del siglo XX.

Chilean nursing experienced important processes of professional autonomy and construction of a public voice between 1940 and 1960, supported by a series of scientific and professional meetings, both national and international, sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation and the Pan American Health Office, among others international organizations. Likewise, the National Health Service, founded in 1952, strengthened the definition of functions and the leadership of these professionals from its early years, by virtue of the importance of the benefits they fulfilled. Privileging the analysis of primary sources produced by the nurses themselves, and their reflections on their work, this article describes some of these processes, shedding light on the history of this profession, and its decisive contribution to the implementation of health policies in Chile. mid 20th century.
