Image Analysis is becoming an important tool in petrography. Its application to characterise the texture and porosity on deteriorated building sandstones has been used successfully. Measurement of percentage of pore was facilitated by the previous consolidation of the samples on a fluorescent resin. The method provides quantitative information of the variation of porosity in thin sections made from samples on different grades of weathering (mechanical erosion). Salt crystallizations (subflorescences and cryptoflorescences) are clearly visible through the textural processing. The limitations of the method are discussed in relation to the effective porosity.
