The military orders suffered an important change in their relationship with the Monarchy during the first half of the 14th century. The most important consequence of this change was, undoubtedly, agreater subordination of the military orders to the political and economic interests of the Monarchs. In order to bring about these changes, the kings gained control of the wealth and property of the orders, altered their statutes, and aboye all, they intervened directly in the provision and destitution of their most important figure: the Master. This article studies the role of the Master of the Order of Alcántara during the reigns of Alfonso XI (1312-1350) and Pedro I. (1350-1369), two monarchs whose political practices and "doctrinal" postulates resulted in the effective control of these important institutions, and led inevitably to the modification of the political regime
