In 1874 the Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky began to reexamine his old sketches for a new novel.
Titled as The Adolescent (also entitled in English as The Raw Youth and An Accidental Family) the novel follows the growth of the young Arkadi in the bourgeois social circles of St. Petersburg at the midnineteenth century. Atypical in the Dostoevskian literature, but common in nineteenth-century literature, the novel of formation or educational novel tells us how Arkadi will learn about the fundamental themes of human life and how to deal with them. Highlighting the constitutive elements of this education novel in the narrative system of Dostoevsky, we try to give a history of the modern Russian intelligentsia in which the education already extrapolated the walls of the school and the rationality of the science.

Em 1874 o escritor russo Fiódor Dostoiévski começou a reexaminar seus antigos esboços para um novo romance. Intitulado como O adolescente, o romance narra o crescimento do jovem Arkadi nos meios sociais burgueses de São Petersburgo em meados do século XIX. Atípico na literatura dostoievskiana, mas comum na literatura do século XIX, o romance nos conta como Arkadi irá aprender sobre os temas fundamentais da vida humana e a maneira como deveria lidar com eles. Procurando destacar os elementos constitutivos desse romance de formação no sistema narrativo de Dostoiévski, ensejamos uma história da intelectualidade moderna russa em que a instrução já extrapolava os muros da escola e a racionalidade da ciência.
