The category of popular culture has traditionally been considered either detached from official culture (romantic idealism) or instead fully embedded into that hegemonic culture (theory of mass society). This essay attempts to rethink popular culture as social practice, radically dialogical. This practice would cause conflict not only among ethnically or territorially different cultures, but also among society and institutions within a single social system.
