La historia de la perforación probablemente se remonta al neolítico con el propósito de abastecer de agua a los primeros asentamientos de población y a su agricultura mediante pozos. Pero no es hasta finales del siglo XIX, con el descubrimiento de la perforación a rotación con circulación directa, denominada “rotary”, cuando la tecnología desarrolla todo su potencial, incorporando avances como: el tricono, los PDC, los preventores de erupciones, la perforación direccional, el motor de fondo, la perforación “offshore”, los registros eléctricos, el posicionamiento dinámico, la medida de los parámetros de la roca en fondo mientras se perfora, etc. En las siguientes líneas se pasa revista a estos avances y su significado
