This article aims to explain how hermeneutic phenomenological methodology has been used in the writing of a doctoral thesis. From the contributions of Max van Manen (and other authors who have delved into this paradigm), and the theories of Vygotsky and Bruner (concerning the importance of cultural context and meaning), a more appropriate methodology in Human Sciences may develop to understand the complexity of the phenomena that occur in the learning environment and its subsequent interpretation, from the narrative and through hermeneutics. The thesis mentioned, tells the life experience of this article’s author, after forty years of teaching, thirty of whom has held various positions in different educational institutions. It is a summary of how this thesis was developed and a holistic vision of the underlying philosophical and methodological principles. In conclusion: it is not only possible to do a doctoral thesis in the narrative of the life and professional experience but, from its interpretation, various fields of research, from the better understanding of phenomena, are reached to raise awareness of the pedagogue figure.
