El regreso de Fernando VII a España en 1814 supuso importantes cambios en la consideración y gestión del patrimonio real. Frente a los proyectos e ideas nacionalizadoras y desamortizadoras de las décadas anteriores y que se reflejaron en la Constitución de 1812 y en los diferentes decretos aprobados por las Cortes, entre marzo de 1814 y enero de 1820 fueron aprobadas disposiciones para la separación efectiva entre los intereses de la real casa y patrimonio de los del Estado, en donde la figura del mayordomo mayor cobraría especial importancia. Asimismo, se tomarían medidas para mejorar la gestión de los sitios reales con el objeto de optimizar sus rentas y beneficios, al formar parte los mismos del mantenimiento del monarca. También, se profundizó en la consideración del carácter privativo y exclusivo del patrimonio real que las Cortes de Cádiz habían puesto en duda.

The return of Fernando VII to Spain in 1814 entailed important changes both in the consideration and management of the royal heritage. Unlike the nationalistic and disentailment projects and ideas that had been adopted during the previous decades, which were clearly reflected in the Constitution of Cádiz of 1812 and the different decrees issued by the Cortes, from March 1814 to 1820 there were taken some steps towards the clear distinction between the spheres of the royal household and royal heritage from those of the Nation State, process in which the office of lord steward gained a significant importance. In addition, there were taken measures to improve the management of the royal heritage with the purpose of increasing the revenue and profits, as they were endowed to the financial support of the king. It was deepened as well the private nature of the royal heritage that belonged exclusively to the royal family.
