Resumen de Registros de lingüistas y traductores franciscanos en los catálogos del Conde de la Viñaza y de Antonio Tovar
The linguistic work of the Franciscans was outstanding and superior to that of the other missionary orders that arrived in the New World. However, the treatment of their work is reflected differently in two Hispanic classic catalogs of Amerind linguistics: the Bibliografía española de lenguas indígenas de América, by Viñaza, and the Catálogo de las lenguas de América del Sur, by Antonio Tovar. The first one follows the methodological guidelines proposed by Menéndez Pelayo to prove the existence of Spanish science, while the other one puts the modern linguistics before the historical testimonies that laid the foundations of the American Indian philology. Despite being different works in terms of concept and method, the contrast shows that they are chronologically complementary in the registration of Franciscan writings.
