Despite the factthat the Alt Empordà regionis presented sometimes as an idyllic paradiseof sirens and shepherds, the industry of ironprocessing, from mining to blast furnaces, hasplayed a major role throughout its history. Inorder to justify this statement, we provideevidence of the use of locally-found iron in theEmpordà region since ancient times; wereview the different procedures for ironproduction that have been used in the region, such as the forges of Maçanet de Cabrenys orthe blast furnaces of Sant Sebastià de laMuga; we comment on the true “miningfever” in the 1850s; finally, we present someconsiderations on the conservation of theindustrial heritage, often disregarded and indanger of disappearing.
