Resumen de El largo itinerario de la boveda helicoidal y la escalera del Baño de Siracusa

Arturo Zaragozá Catalán

  • In regards to the Construction History it is surprising that one of the most complex geometric forms, such as the helicoid, has passed so soon to monumental architecture. The domed spiral staircase is formed by a barrel vault generated by thedisplacement of an arch by a helix. This vault is called Vis de Saint-Gilles in the stereotomy treaties of the Modern Agewhen it is made with cut stone. The difficulty of executing this piece is that each segment is a carefully rigged helicalfraction. It has been considered as the most difficult piece of stonework. In fact, it cannot be done by a cutting method thatavoids any drawing. The Syracuse bathroom staircase lacks the excellent finishes of the vaulted stairs built after the 10thcentury. However, its underground and rock character again raises this problem. How could the design of the Syracusebathroom staircase be carried out, at a time when the dihedral system of representation was not known? These notes try tounravel how the design could have been done and approximate the context of a possible dating.
