  Municipium Mactaritanum. A new examination of the epigraphic evidence used to write the municipal history of the colonia Aelia Aurelia Mactaritana enables to revise the scenarios suggested before by the specialists of the cities of Roman Africa. Indeed, for a deeply romanized city, the chief town of the district known as pagus Thuscae et Gunzuzi, and the headquarter of the Quattuor publica Africae, it would be difficult to admit that Mactaris remained a mere civitas peregrina until the last quarter of the second century A.D. before reaching the rank of a colony. The revision of the reading of an inscription dating back to the time of Marcus Aurelius (CIL VIII, 11799 + IlAfr 200 a et b + AE, 1960, 114) and the discovery of a new epigraphic fragment of a dedication in honor of the African vir clarissimus, M. Valerius Quadratus (CIL VIII, 11811 = ILPB, 103), allow to reconstruct in a different way the various phases of the municipal history of the city and especially to establish that before receiving the status of colony, it was a Latin municipium.

  Le réexamen du dossier épigraphique mis à contribution pour écrire l’histoire municipale de la colonia Aelia Aurelia Mactaritana permet de revoir les scénarios proposés par les spécialistes de l’histoire municipale des cités africo-romaines. Pour une cité profondément romanisée, chef-lieu du pagus Thuscae et Gunzuzi et siège du bureau des Quattuor publica Africae, il serait difficile d’admettre qu’elle ait pu garder le statut de ciuitas pérégrine jusqu’au dernier quart du IIe siècle de l’ère chrétienne avant d’accéder au rang de colonie. Aujourd’hui, la révision d’une inscription datable du règne de Marc Aurèle (CIL VIII, 11799 + IlAfr, 200 a et b + AE, 1960, 114) et la découverte d’un fragment épigraphe qui vient compléter une dédicace en l’honneur du clarissime africain M. Valerius Quadratus (CIL VIII, 11811 = ILPB, 103) nous donnent l’occasion d’envisager autrement les différentes phases de l’histoire municipale de cette cité et de préciser notamment qu’elle fut d’abord municipe de droit latin.
