Resumen de Perceptions of students about their contact with artistic expressions at school

Rafael Tormenta, Manuela Terrasêca

  • The positive outlook of the scientific community and educational policy regarding the importance of artistic expression to young students’ comprehensive training, and at the same time schools’ and society in general’s insistence on failing to recognize it as a full-fledged training field, stress the interest on developing studies in this area based on the students’ own experiences. This article presents a study which aims to know students’ perception regarding their own experience attending artistic expression subjects in regular school. The data results from a questionnaire and from students’ self-evaluation records. It concludes that students view those subjects as positive to their personal training, giving them competences that impact their future life trajectory; however, it also concludes that the emphasis placed by schools and politics on so-called academic learning tends to drastically diminish the participation of said students in these subjects.
