Resumen de L’Allemagne et l’Otan: « What else ? »

Jean-Sylvestre Mongrenier

  • In France, Germany has long been seen as an “Atlanticist” power. From a Gaullist point of view, this adjective was pejorative. However, the Brexit, the electoral success of Donald Trump the same year and his criticisms about the United States’allies have shaken German leader’s confidence in NATO. It does not mean that Berlin really endorsed the idea of a “European army” base on a French-German core. As things stand, the German political system does not permit that. Moreover, putting into question NATO could reopen the “German question” and increase disagreements within Europe. The balance between Germany and its neighbours requires the Euro-Atlantic level, with the United-States as a hegemonic power. On the other hand, the hypothetical demise of NATO could bring up to surface geopolitical problems far away from the debate about an uncertain “European army”.
