The monastery of Santa María de Monfero (A Coruña) was founded at the end of the first half of the Twelfth century as a community of “black monks” from the abbey of Carracedo (El Bierzo), and joined Cister in 1201. The doubts raised in the historiography on the first Benedictine foundation and its subsequent affi liation with the Cistercian order, documentary evidences of this change, the sources of the period and, above all, the work of the traditional scriptores – who still used the round-Visigothic script until the eighties of the Twelfth century – constitute the object of this paper as a necessary starting point for the study of the Monfero written culture and to place the origin of the Cistercian officium, that would reach a remarkable development in the fi rst half of the Thirteenth century.
