Las cuentas del Archivo: aportación al conocimiento de los primeros años del Archivo Público y General de Galicia (Archivo del Reino de Galicia)

    Los primeros años de historia del Archivo General y Público de Galicia, el actual Archivo del Reino de Galicia, establecido en el año 1775, son bastante bien conocidos. Los informes y otros documentos relacionados con su creación, y ciertas memorias del siglo XIX, ofrecen abundante información sobre aspectos relacionados con sus locales, personal, presupuesto, tratamiento técnico y servicio a los usuarios.

    Pero la existencia de un pleito inédito tramitado entre 1800 y 1802 en la Audiencia de Galicia ilumina de nuevo aquellos primeros años y plantea interrogantes sobre algunas supuestas certezas. La más relevante se refiere a la autoría y la fecha de los primeros instrumentos de descripción, los famosos “Libros índices”, los 106 volúmenes que describen de forma individualizada los documentos de la Audiencia, que todavía constituyen una referencia obligada de consulta e investigación.

    Así pues, nos proponemos analizar este documento en el contexto de la creación del Archivo y de la planificación y desarrollo de sus actividades para intentar aclarar el origen de aquellos instrumentos de descripción.

    The early years of the General and Public Archives of Galicia, today the Archive of the Kingdom of Galicia, established in 1775, are well known. The reports and other documents regarding its creation, together with the memories from the 19th century, offer a great deal of information about different aspects of the building, the staff, the origin of its budget, the reception, arrangement or the users service.

    But the existence of an unpublished lawsuit processed between 1800 and 1802 in the Royal Audience of Galicia offer new light over those first steps of the Archives and formulate new questions over the certainties we have.

    The most important of these certainties is about the authorship and the begin-ning date of the first finding aids of the Archives, the famous “Libros índices” (“Index books”), 106 volumes which describe individually the records of the Audience and that are indeed nowadays a mandatory resource for consulting and researching.

    In this sense, our purpose is to analyse this record in the context of the Archives foundation and the plan and development of its activities trying to elucidate the origin of such those venerable finding aids.
