Hasta 1835, en el término municipal de Elche, coexistían dos Ayuntamientos que tenían su propia gestión: el de la villa y el del arrabal o Universidad de San Juan.
La Universidad era una administración local de carácter menor que, por circunstancias históricas, se prolongó en el tiempo. Cuando se suprimió su Ayuntamiento, los papeles de su archivo pasaron al archivo de la villa. El Archivo Histórico Municipal de Elche trabaja en la reconstrucción del mismo, ya que no se conservó ordenado.

Until 1835, there were two town hall’s coexisting in the municipality of Elche and each one had its own management: one for the town hall and another for the arrabal, also known as the Universidad of San Juan.
The Universidad was a local administration of secondary importance wich for historical reasons remained over a prolonged time. When this secondary town hall was eliminated, the documents of its archives were passed over to the main town hall. The Historical Archivo of Elche Works toward a reconstruction of these papers because the documents were not conserved in a systematic way.
