Given the Internet, as well as other tools that can be used from one’s home, the library must rethink its place within society and the services it provides. In order for the profession to adapt to constant evolution, it is important to underscore the facilities and public services of the library if it wishes to preserve customer loyalty and ensure its continued relevance. In this regard, this new dimension, which significantly changes the relationship of libraries with the public, often questions their role and character. How does one come to terms with new publics, new users and new expectations that go far beyond the traditional services offered by libraries?

Face à Internet et à toutes les facilités accessibles de chez soi, la bibliothèque doit se repositionner dans la société et dans les services qu’elle propose. Pour s’adapter à cette évolution permanente du métier, il est important de privilégier la fonction d’accueil et de service public, pour permettre à la bibliothèque de fidéliser ses publics et d’assurer sa pérennité. De ce fait, cette nouvelle dimension, qui modifie profondément les relations des bibliothécaires avec ses usagers, remet souvent en question leur rôle et leur personnalité. Comment faire face du mieux possible à ces nouveaux publics, ces nouveaux usages, ces nouvelles attentes, qui dépassent de loin les services traditionnels des bibliothèques ?
